Strong is the New Skinny..!

What is Classical Pilates?

Classical Pilates is the original work designed by Joseph and Clara Pilates with little or no deviation. The most obvious difference between Classical Pilates and other disciplines is the exercise order. The traditional order recruits specific muscle firing patterns over and over challenging the body’s movement by changing the center of gravity and the surface stability. This systematic approach allows significant changes to happen to the body and creates strength quickly. "Contemporary" methods have no order and often change the goal or purpose of the exercises and in turn compromise the integrity of the original work. There are many variations of Pilates in the market today. All are Pilates based, but only the classical work is truly Pilates and has stood the test of time.

What Can Pilates Do for You?

Pilates is a movement system designed to stretch, strengthen and balance the body. Practiced faithfully, Pilates yields numerous benefits. Strength, flexibility and coordination are key components in an effective Pilates Program. Posture, balance, core strength and lung capacity are all greatly increased. Bone density and joint health improve, and many experience body awareness for the first time. Pilates teaches balance and control to the body and can spill over into other areas of ones life.

I had my last regular lesson with my Pure Pilates/Peak teacher trainer Pamela Garcia this morning, which was super tough. But I managed not to cry! (until later) and I got to give her this poster I had made for her. Being trained as a Comprehensively Certified Classical Pilates instructor by Pam changed me as a person, as a scientist and as a teacher of physics. I am grateful for her ethos as an instructor which is that our body shape or size isn't what matters so much as pushing for the strongest version of ourselves, whatever that means for each individual. Pam taught me how to accommodate my limitations while also pushing me to see that I could do more than I thought I could. She did this at a time when I was experiencing tremendous self-doubt about my abilities as a physicist, and her lessons stretched past making peace with a body that had been damaged in a car accident to seeing that I was intellectually capable of meeting the challenges of my profession as a physicist. She also taught me more about teaching and learning than any physicist ever has. In the end, when I arrived in Cambridge, I was in such chronic pain that I was taking NSAIDs every day. Thanks to Patrishya Fitzgerald at Upward Spiral Studio and to Pam, it has been years since I needed anything more than the occasional ice pack. Never underestimate the power of a good teacher or the power of challenging yourself to grow in a new direction. We do not have complete control over the good or bad things that happen to us in life, but there is tremendous power in having a beginner's mindset. Thank you for teaching me how to be consciously incompetent, Pam.

“I am Gloria Gasperi and I am from Italy. I am a comprehensively certified instructor for Peak Pilates. I had the luck to meet Pamela Garcia about one year go, when I went to the States for my PpsIII. She has been the trainer whom I made the assessment with. Well, what I found is a beautiful person and very special trainer. She has a very high level of professionalism, she is humble, available to listen to you with an open mind and a deep heart; she has a real love for her job and she strongly believes in Pilates as a life-style. I really felt in love for her "pilates house" and for the atmosphere you can breathe in her studio, so friendly and joyful. She is the person I know I can contact anytime for any reason I need, sure that I will find the right answer. She is also mother of three wonderful guys and I think this gives her that particular "mother care" to her students. She really helps me, every time I work with her, to understand how to make people feel the right connections in their body and mind. I really feel lucky to have found a beautiful person, trainer, colleague, teacher and a very very special friend."

“If you are lucky, life sends you gifts that will change your life forever. Pam Garcia is one of those gifts. I have followed Pam from a Pilates class in our gym, to a studio in that gym, then home studio, and now at Pure Pilates Inc.. I have followed her, because Pam has changed my life, my body, my mind. The process has been brilliantly progressive and intensely catered to my needs, and the needs of others. We, Pam's longtime followers, are truly athletes thanks to her knowledge, expertise, and intensity. Brava! I am looking forward to the next ten years and beyond. Forever grateful.”

- Carol Martignetti Walker

"I was fortunate to find Pam's mat class ten years ago, and I have been training with her ever since. Pam has an innate understanding of Classical Pilates and how it can transform your body and mind. She has challenged me on every level, and I continue to get stronger, leaner, calmer and more flexible as I age. Pam is respected by Pilates professionals all over the world but her students on the South Shore are her biggest fans. It gets me choked up to think about how much you matter to me.”

Our Studio Equipment

Originally called the Universal Reformer; Joseph Pilates believed this piece of equipment would universally change the human body. The Reformer is a carriage that moves along a frame attached with springs. The exercises are designed to challenge the body in movement. Posture, strength, coordination and balance are tested by a variety of variables which include resistance and friction.

Named after the greatest car available at the time; Joseph Pilates called this piece the “Cadillac”. Since it’s invention, it is also referred to as “Cadi” and the “trap table”. The Cadillac is used to re-educate poor movement patterns and/or create challenge to a good movement pattern. With an endless array of exercises and numerous options of spring combinations, this piece truly is the top of the line.

The Tower is also referred to as a half-Cadillac and is a combination of a reformer, mat and Cadillac. When in reformer mode the tower end is not in use. When flipped to a mat, the design is such that all of the options from the 2 ends of a Traditional Cadillac are available on one end, hence the name "Tower". Again this piece is used to re-educate poor movement patterns and/or create challenge to a good movement pattern.

High/Low Combination Chair

High/Low Combination Chair

The High/Low Combination Chair builds strength, coordination and balance. In the High Chair mode its design utilizes alignment tools to build strength in the postural muscles as well as the upper and lower body.

In the Low Chair mode it challenges strength, posture and balance because it has less assistance.

Wunda Chair

Wunda Chair

The original chair designed by Joseph Pilates and the first piece of home exercise equipment; his vision was to have one in every apartment and hotel in NYC. The most challenging of the Chairs; the Wunda Chair demands strength and stability due to it’s lack of assistance. Posture, balance, coordination, strength and stability are all heartily increased when using the Wunda Chair.

High Ladder Barrel

High Ladder Barrel

The High Ladder Barrel increases flexibility and strength of the entire body. It is used to both assist and challenge movements from other apparatus.

The Ped-O-Pul helps strengthen your deep postural muscles as well as the upper body. The pole is unstable which requires your body to maintain stability during movement.

Spine Corrector

Spine Corrector

The Spine Corrector was designed to assist in correcting spinal alignment as well as strengthen the deep abdominal muscles. This barrel assists in correcting poor posture by opening and stretching the chest. It also lengthens and strengthens the hips and legs while protecting the lower back. Other exercises challenge your Powerhouse to maintain posture while executing movement.

Comprehensive Certification Training Schedule

Pilates for Gait  9:00 am - 12:00 pm    $120.00

As our society evolves from a moving to sedentary lifestyle, proper alignment and mechanics while walking becomes more important.  When we observe people walking it becomes evident that sedentary living patterns create inefficient movement; over time the friction within the body will hurt us.  In this workshop we will look at ways Pilates and Pilates based exercises can help improve our clients gait mechanics.

Pilates Posture and Movement    1:00 pm - 5:00 pm  $160.00

Our posture is directly related to our movement patterns but the reverse is not always true.  Posture and our "natural" alignment dictate our habitual movement patterns and our habitual movement patterns create our posture.  The movement patterns we do in Pilates don't always result in habitual movement patterns and therefore don't always create the carry over we often look for.  In this workshops we will cover how we can move the Pilates movements into lasting postural changes.

Pilates Mat Class    5:15 pm - 6:15 pm    $60.00

Spiraldynamik (with a trade mark sign)  9:00 am - 12:00 pm    $120.00

Developed by an international research team lead by Dr. Christian Larsen from Switzerland, Spiraldynamik is a movement concept based on human locomotion.  Everybody has the full potential of optimal movement.  Spiraldynamik provides a model of movement to help each of us discover our own movement potential.  In this workshop you will learn the principles of Spiraldynamik and how these principles create a new dimension in your Pilates sessions.

Pilates for Athletes    1:00 pm - 5:00 pm     $160.00

Pilates was created as a form of general conditioning that allows you to do what you want to do with energy and without pain.  Since Pilates strengthens and stretches the body uniformly it is especially beneficial for Athletes.  Most Athletes spend a lot of time on specific technique and specific strength, mobility and balance training.  The training specific to their sport or the position they play.  This leads to a very unbalanced body as they only train "'what they need" during their sport.  General conditioning has become less important as Athletes specialize more however this has created many injuries as parts of the body get over developed and parts stay under developed. Pilates can the form of training that increases the Athletes general conditioning, making the specific training more beneficial.  We will cover how you can adjust the Pilates method to address the needs of your Athletes.
